CLASS LEADS TO ORIGINAL DESIGN!

Jana Lee and I had a one-on-one applique session last week at the Attic Window Quilt Shop. She wanted to learn my method of freezer paper applique.  I thought if she knew how to make the various shapes: oval, stem, leaf, square, petal, then she could make anything.
Jana Lee caught on quite rapidly and in no time had all the various shapes made. Our last try was making the flower petals. She then took all the pieces and made a cute little applique flower in a pot. She is holding the project in the first picture.  This is her original design! Now she can sandwich and quilt it and use it as a table topper, wall hanging, mug rug, whatever. The important thing is that now she is ready to tackle El Cameno Real.  I made the wall hanging in the book a few years ago and this got Jana Lee enthused about applique.  You can read about my wall hanging here.

It was a fun day and I can't wait to see Jana Lee's quilt.  I hope to post pictures as it develops.

ARE THERE BEES IN YOUR ATTIC?

The Bees In The Attic Bee Hive met Wednesday at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  Before our meeting started, we had some show and tell.   Above, Barb shows us her latest flimsy.  So cute.
Cathy was queen this month and above she lays out the blocks we gave her.  These were easy blocks.  I think the hard work is yet to come, as Cathy intends to put a strip of fabric and a square between each block.  Can't wait to see the finished quilt.  She is making it for her daughter who just moved into a new house.
Karen is Queen of the hive next month and Wednesday she distributed packets and instructions as to what block she wants us to make for her.  Above she shows us how to do the strip piecing.
These are the fabrics and instructions for the block she wants us to make.  What fun this block will be.

JUST USING MY SCRAPS

I have finished some projects this past week and want to show them to you.  Above is a quilt that I made from blocks donated by the women in a Bee Hive I participated in last year. As I recall they were asked to use their brightly colored scraps to make these blocks.   I hate the new Picasa photo editor because you can't see the wonderful vibrant colors in this quilt.  If anyone has a better photo editor they can tell me about, please do.  Anyway, I love this quilt and thank the women so much for their blocks.
This is the quilt that Adrienne and I worked on during Happy Scrappers at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  She put our blocks together, added the borders and made the backing.  I sandwiched and quilted it and added the binding.  I love how this low volume quilt turned out.
This is a close up of the quilt.
I have worked on this quilt at Happy Scrappers for over a year.  I used scraps to make the blocks.  Again, I was unable to get the vibrant colors to show, but it is really a pretty quilt.  It will go to charity.
This is a close up.  Ugh, the colors all look washed out!  So sorry.

WE HAVE A WINNER!

Melanie Phipps was the first person to combine her rows of free quilt patterns gathered from quilt shops participating in the Row by Row Experience and turn her finished quilt into the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  It is adorable.  The row at the top of the quilt is from the pattern that the Attic Window Quilt Shop gave to customers.  Melanie did an excellent job of designing this quilt.

HOW TO KEEP COOL THIS SUMMER

You are going to want to make one of these.  When Cathy stopped by my house recently to show me her latest project, I got so excited I immediately started making a list of my children and grand children who could use one.  These are called cooling scarves.  Cathy has one around her neck and is holding another.  With all the hot and humid weather we've been having lately I imagine these will be a welcome gift.  Some of my kids are runners, some of my grandchildren work in hot warehouses or auto repair places, others are out in the sun working all day.  I can just visualize them cooling off with one of these around their neck.
Above is a closer look at the scarves.  If you are interested in her class call the Attic Window Quilt Shop and asked to be put on the list.  I don't know if Cathy plans on a class, but I bet if enough people are interested, she will.  I can't wait to try making one.  She says it is very simple.  Watch for an update on class and pattern details.

MAKE THIS SIMPLE TABLE RUNNER

Hope everyone had a lovely weekend.  I was busy sewing.  Above is the Zig Zagging Along table runner that I made.  The pattern is by Cut Loose Press and can be purchased at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  It was really fun and easy.  Click on the picture to get a better view.
A couple of years ago I took a bag class with Lee Anne at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.  When I showed my daughter, she liked the bag so much that she took it home with her.  Then last week, she asked me to make another one using Michigan State fabrics.  So I did! The pattern is Barbados Bag by Pink Sand Beach Designs.  If you get a chance I recommend you take a class from Lee Anne.  I know I didn't have nearly as much trouble figuring out the instructions when I took her class.  This time it took me forever!

NEW IDEAS FOR MAKING

While at the Attic Window Quilt Shop yesterday, I noticed some new samples.  I love this Double Gear Zip bag that Diana made.
Take a look at the inside.  The pattern is by Annie.  Chris told me the patterns are on their way and will be available at the shop soon.
This "Just In Case" was made by Marilyn.
This is the inside of this lovely case.  It would be great for sewing notions, projects, or school supplies.  The pattern is by Annie and can be purchased at the Attic Window Quilt Shop.
Marjorie, a reader from Idaho sent me this picture.  This is what she says about it:

"Caroll, I was reading an old blog from 2012.  You mentioned doing a MaryLou Weidman cow quilt.  Here is a bad pic of the one I did for a challenge for the state fair.  It was the purple fabric challenge.  It was fun but it was a lot of work because I had to redraft and resize all the pieces.  If you have a picture of your cow I would love to see it.  Hope you are cool.  110 today on the porch.  The AC hasn't shut off. Happy sewing, Marjorie"

Thanks Marjorie for sharing with us.  Your cow is adorable!

WE DO GET THINGS DONE

The Happy Scrappers met Wednesday at the Attic Window Quilt Shop and the above picture proves we do get things done.  In an earlier post I showed LeeAnne working on this quilt top.  Today she finished it.  We don't think it needs a border.  This quilt is going to her favorite charity.
Above Adrienne shows another finish. In an earlier post I showed you the blocks Adrienne and I were making.  Adrienne took the blocks home, sewed them together, added the border and made the backing.  Today I took it home to quilt it.  I love the way it turned out, don't you?  This quilt is also going to charity.
Adrienne had another finish to show us.  I love this low volume quilt.
Adrienne has quite a stash and is trying to use up her low volume fabrics, so she also made this queen size quilt.
This is a closer look at the lovely fabrics and quilting.

HAPPY SCRAPPERS MEET AT ATTIC WINDOW QUILT SHOP

The Happy Scrappers met at the Attic Window Quilt Shop this past Saturday.  Not only did we have fun sharing and caring but we had some show-n-tell too!  Above, LeeAnne shows us a quilt that her cousin Joyce made.  It will be on display at the shop.  I think she made it using a Jelly Roll
LeeAnne made this stunning quilt from a Jelly Roll.  Love these colors!
Nancy worked on making this Charity quilt with strips from her stash.  What a great idea!
Sheryl worked on this beautiful quilt.  She used a layer cake.  I hope she brings it back after she adds the borders.  The fabrics are lovely.
LeeAnne worked on making another Jelly Roll quilt.

Adrienne and I worked on making these blocks for a Charity quilt.  She is going to make another block, sew them together and add borders, then I will quilt it. I think it is going to be a nice quilt made from our of scraps.
Above Adrienne is running the sweeper at the end of the day.  We called her Mrs. Mop.  I post this as a reminder to all of us to clean up after ourselves before we leave the shop.
